Elk
(bulls and cows) have two
ivory teeth
in their upper jaw
. These
teeth
are called ivories, buglers, or whistlers. A bull elks ivory tooth is much larger than a cow and has two roots, where a cow elks tooth has only one.
Elk ivory teeth vary in size, shape, and color.
The six (6) elk teeth in this auction are from legally harvested Colorado and Wyoming bull and cow elk. Of all the elk teeth I've sold, these are a little lighter in color and smaller in size.
Measuring across the tooth’s surface, the two teeth from my bull elk are 3/8" to 1/2" long x 3/8” to 1/4"
wide; tapering to about 1/8" at the smallest area of the tooth. The four teeth from the cow elk are 1/4" to 3/8" long x 1/4" wide and also taper
to about 1/8" at the smallest area of the tooth.

Uses of Elk Ivory Teeth in Jewelry – Starting in the early 1900’s, Navajo Native Americans were the first to use elk teeth ivory in their jewelry. Primarily used in pieces made for men
as a display of strength and virility,
these teeth today adorn jewelry worn by both men and woman.
